2025 Flu Vaccine Explained

2025 Flu Vaccine Explained

The FDA has recommended that the flu vaccine for the 2025-2026 season be a trivalent formulation, protecting against two influenza A strains and one influenza B strain. This means the vaccine will target a combination of A/Wisconsin/67/2022 (H1N1)pdm09-like, A/District of Columbia/27/2023 (H3N2)-like, and B/Austria/1359417/2021 (B/Victoria lineage)-like viruses. This is in line with the recommendations made by the World Health Organization.

The FDA announced recommendations for the 2025-2026 influenza vaccine composition in March 2025. These recommendations, which are similar to the previous year’s, guide vaccine manufacturers in producing the updated flu vaccines. The CDC recommends that people ages 6 months and older get a flu vaccine, ideally by the end of October.
